Cap 0.6.1 goes fully native and cuts memory use by 88%

Cap’s screen recorder is now a native Rust app on macOS, Windows and Linux, with lighter playback, faster exports and 180+ fixes.
Open-source screen recorder Cap released version 0.6.1 on October 20 and announced it on X the next morning. Its engine was always Rust; now the interface is too, rebuilt on GPUI with no web view.
The native app is now the only version of Cap on every platform, and 0.6.0 users update in place. Cap’s changelog says recordings, settings and macOS permissions carry over, so there is nothing to reinstall.
The numbers are the headline. Compared with the old app, editor playback uses 77% less CPU and 88% less memory (440 MB vs 3.7 GB), and recording uses 46% less CPU and 87% less memory. Exports are up to 5x faster, and the release bundles more than 180 fixes from 41 contributors.
The update also adds a signed background updater, a new permissions onboarding flow and a native look that uses each system’s font. Cap’s announcement does not mention any pricing changes.
