Instant recordings in Cap now process up to 17x faster

By Steven Van ·

Cap's own GPU farm now finishes instant recordings in seconds, and the founder says these early times can still get faster.

On October 27, Cap said instant recordings now process up to 17x faster. The open-source screen recorder runs that work on its own GPU farm, and most of it happens while you are still recording.

Processing times from Cap's October 27 post.

Cap's post gives four before-and-after times. A recording under a minute goes from 10 seconds to 3.5. One to five minutes goes from 32 seconds to 5. Five to fifteen minutes goes from 72 seconds to 7. A recording past 15 minutes goes from 5 minutes to 18 seconds. The 17x figure is the top of that range.

Founder Richie McIlroy posted the same chart minutes later. He said the move onto the in-house farm took the last few days, the results are early, and the setup scales by adding GPUs. Cap's changelog and blog do not describe this change, and the post does not say which plans or apps have it.
