Messages and Token Counting requests on the first-party Claude API can now be four times larger, while partner platforms keep their own limits.
The Anthropic maximum request size for the Messages API and the Token Counting API has gone from 32 MB to 128 MB. The change applies to the first-party Claude API.
Limits by endpoint
The API overview now lists these request size limits for the first-party Claude API:
- Messages and Token Counting: 128 MB
- Message Batches API: 256 MB
- Files API: 500 MB
- Sessions, Agents and Environments: 32 MB
A request that exceeds the limit returns a 413 request_too_large error.
Partner platforms
The increase does not cover partner-operated platforms, which set their own limits. Bedrock limits requests to 20 MB, and Claude Models on Google Cloud (Google managed) limits them to 30 MB. Claude Platform on AWS, Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) and Microsoft Foundry support Messages and Token Counting requests of up to 32 MB. The documentation points readers to each platform's own documentation for current values.
