# Zero-configuration Express backends

By Steven Van · 2025-09-05

Vercel's framework-defined infrastructure now deploys Express apps directly, without vercel.json redirects or an /api folder.

Express applications can now deploy to [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) with zero configuration. Vercel's framework-defined infrastructure recognises and understands Express apps directly, so there's no need for redirects in vercel.json or routing through an /api folder.

To deploy, an app needs a file that imports and exports the Express app (or uses a port listener) from one of several recognised locations, such as app.js or src/index.ts. Once deployed, the Express app runs as a single Vercel Function using Fluid compute by default, so it scales up and down with traffic. Full details are in the [Express on Vercel documentation](<https://vercel.com/docs/frameworks/backend/express>).
