# Vercel Sandbox now support Custom Images

By Steven Van · 2026-06-30

The public beta lets a sandbox boot from any image pushed to Vercel Container Registry instead of a managed image.

[Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) Sandbox can now boot from a custom root filesystem instead of only its managed images. [Custom images](<https://vercel.com/docs/sandbox/concepts/images>) are in public beta as of 30 June 2026, pulled from Vercel Container Registry, so any image pushed with docker push is available to a sandbox immediately.

The point is to bring an existing OS, toolchain and dependencies into a sandbox without spinning up compute to create a Snapshot first. Custom images still boot from a precompiled snapshot in the same format as Sandbox Snapshots, so cold start performance isn't affected.
