# Updated defaults for deployment retention

By Steven Van · 2025-09-15

Projects still set to "unlimited" retention switch to fixed limits on October 15, 2025, unless a custom policy is already set.

Starting **October 15, 2025**, [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) is changing the default deployment retention policy for any project still set to the legacy "unlimited" option. The "unlimited" choice itself will also stop being selectable when editing retention settings from that date.

The new defaults are:

- Canceled deployments: 30 days, maximum 1 year

- Errored deployments: 3 months, maximum 1 year

- Pre-production deployments: 6 months, maximum 3 years

- Production deployments: 1 year, maximum 3 years

Projects with a custom retention setting already configured are not affected. Team owners can set a default retention policy for new projects under a team from Teams > Security & Privacy > Deployment Retention Policy, and can apply that policy to existing projects too. A project's 10 most recent production deployments, and any deployment currently aliased, are never deleted regardless of age. Full details are in the [deployment retention documentation](<https://vercel.com/docs/security/deployment-retention#setting-a-deployment-retention-policy>).
