# Update Project Settings from the Vercel CLI

By Steven Van · 2026-07-08

The vercel project update command changes framework and build settings from the terminal, with JSON output built for scripting and agents.

The [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) CLI can now update a project's framework preset and build settings directly, without opening the dashboard. Running *vercel project update* (aliased *set*) against a linked project, or a project passed by name, lets you change the framework preset, build command, dev command, install command, and output directory, or reset any of those back to automatic detection.

Invalid framework slugs and settings are rejected with suggestions before any API call is made. The command also supports a JSON output format, returning whether anything changed, which settings changed, and the project's ID and name, with nothing else written to stdout. Vercel says this lets an agent diagnose a failed build, correct the framework preset, build command, or output directory, and redeploy without dashboard access.

The feature requires [Vercel CLI](<https://vercel.com/docs/cli/project>) v54.21.1 or later, installable with **npm i -g vercel@latest**.
