# Split-tgz is now the default CLI archive deployment behavior

By Steven Van · 2025-02-11

Plain --archive=tgz now gets the faster uploads that split-tgz offered, and the separate split-tgz flag is deprecated.

The separate split-tgz archive option for the Vercel CLI is deprecated. [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) has made its behaviour the default for tgz, after confirming it is stable.

Archive deployments are meant for large projects with thousands of files deployed from the CLI. vercel deploy --archive=split-tgz was released earlier as its own option, with up to 30% faster uploads and no file upload size limits. Those benefits now come with plain --archive=tgz, so nothing needs to change in the command.

The [CLI docs](<https://vercel.com/docs/cli/deploy#archive>) add a caveat: archiving can make some deployments slower, because it negates the caching of source files that speeds up later uploads.
