# Repository checkout and Git LFS downloads are now faster

By Steven Van · 2026-10-13

LFS-enabled projects saw file preparation times fall by 54% during rollout on build machines with more than two vCPUs.

Preparing project files before a build now takes less time on [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>). The improvements apply automatically, with no action required.

## Measured reductions during rollout

On build machines with more than two vCPUs, Vercel reported:

- A 20% reduction in the average time to get project files ready.

- A 54% reduction for LFS-enabled projects, saving approximately 13 seconds per deployment on this step.

- A 22% reduction in the 90th-percentile preparation time, the threshold within which 90% of deployments finish this step.

## Using Git LFS

The [Git LFS documentation](<https://vercel.com/docs/project-configuration/git-settings#git-large-file-storage-lfs>) explains that support can be enabled or disabled in project settings. When enabled, Vercel pulls the LFS objects used in the repository. Turning Git LFS on requires a redeployment.
