# Personalization strategies that power ecommerce growth

Vercel's guide to ecommerce personalization covers architectural and content approaches, common mistakes, and which rendering method suits each use case.

Vercel published a guide to ecommerce [personalization](<https://vercel.com/blog/personalization-strategies-that-power-ecommerce-growth>), covering how to implement it with Next.js and [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>). Its advice is to roll personalization out incrementally, with the right tools, without giving up performance.

The post splits personalization into two types:

- **Architectural:** changing how the site is structured or routed for a user, such as A/B testing landing pages, logged-in versus guest content, or geographic storefronts. Vercel points to Partial Prerendering, Edge Middleware and feature flags for this.

- **Content:** changing what a user sees, such as product recommendations, search result ranking and promotions based on past behaviour. Vercel points to server-side rendering, dynamic content injection and third-party integrations.

It lists three common mistakes. Configuration and experimentation tools get used to manage content. Client-side personalization is overused, which causes layout shifts and slow page loads. And everything gets rendered in real time, which raises resource costs without always improving the experience.

On the tooling side, the post names Next.js Middleware for geo-targeting and A/B testing, the Flags SDK for feature flagging, Speed Insights, and the Vercel Marketplace for third-party personalization engines. It also includes a table matching four approaches to a rendering method. CMS-driven personalization uses static rendering (ISR/PPR), and product recommendations use a hybrid of a static base and dynamic updates. Search personalization and cart or checkout offers use dynamic rendering.

The post cites a return of $20 for every $1 spent on personalization and 40% more revenue for high-growth brands. It also says 88% of marketers report positive ROI.
