# Vercel Labs ships agent-desktop for coding agents

By Steven Van · 2026-10-31

The Apache-2.0 CLI reads desktop apps through the accessibility tree, though a separate cursor for each agent is an opt-in overlay.

On October 31, 2026, Chris Tate at Vercel Labs introduced [agent-desktop](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/agent-desktop>), computer use for a coding agent on macOS, Windows, and Linux. It runs in the background while you keep working. The default mode reads apps through the operating system's accessibility tree and does not move the system pointer.

Official agent-desktop announcement demo.

The CLI and C library are free under Apache-2.0. Install with npm install -g agent-desktop. A snapshot returns JSON with a ref for every control. The agent acts on that ref, then snapshots again. There is no model inside, and web pages are left to agent-browser.

Several agents can each show a cursor. That overlay is opt-in, on macOS, Windows, and Linux X11. It never replaces the system pointer. Headless actions still take turns on the shared pointer, while those drawn cursors can travel at the same time.
