# Introducing Chatbot Template

By Steven Van · 2025-04-09

The free, open-source Next.js template supports any AI model and adds generative UI, custom artifacts and in-browser code execution.

Vercel has [released Chatbot](<https://vercel.com/blog/introducing-chatbot>), a free, open-source template for building conversational AI apps like ChatGPT or Claude artifacts. An update on the announcement says Chat SDK has been renamed to the Chatbot template. A new Chat SDK now covers chat bots across Slack, Teams, GitHub and Discord.

The template is a production-ready [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) application built on Next.js App Router, with the AI SDK at its core, so any AI model and provider can be used. It includes message persistence, authentication, multimodal support and shareable chats. Vercel says it draws on patterns from building v0.

- **Generative UI:** dynamic, interactive interfaces that go beyond text responses and adapt to the conversation.

- **Custom artifacts:** specialised components for specific use cases, from document creation to interactive tools.

- **In-browser code execution:** the chatbot can write and run code in the browser with WASM and pyodide, with no separate sandbox setup.

Documentation at chatbot.ai-sdk.dev covers project setup, architecture decisions, building artifacts, customising themes and fonts, testing strategies and migration guides. The template can be deployed with one click.
