# Edge Middleware and Edge Functions are now powered by Vercel Functions

By Steven Van · 2025-06-25

Edge Middleware and Edge Functions move onto Vercel Functions' shared infrastructure, with Fluid compute and unified pricing.

[Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>)'s Edge Middleware and Edge Functions now run on the same underlying infrastructure as the rest of Vercel Functions. Routing Middleware executes before the cache as a full Vercel Function with Fluid compute; Edge Functions run after the cache using the Edge runtime.

- Fluid compute-ready: lower cold starts and cost across both

- Multi-runtime: Node.js and Edge runtimes both supported

- Framework-driven: functions deploy automatically from supported framework code

- Consistent pricing: one Vercel Functions pricing model based on Active CPU time

Vercel Routing Middleware, the new name for what was Edge Middleware, is now generally available to all users. The [announcement](<https://vercel.com/docs/functions>) is now marked historical: Vercel notes that Edge Functions are deprecated for new projects, and recommends Vercel Functions with the Node.js runtime and Fluid compute, with Routing Middleware for request-time routing before a response completes.
