# Chat SDK now includes AI SDK tools

By Steven Van · 2026-05-20

Presets and a requireApproval gate scope what chat agents can read or write, with the old top-level chat exports now deprecated.

Chat SDK, part of [Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>), now ships a built-in AI SDK toolset through a new [chat/ai subpath](<https://chat-sdk.dev/docs/ai>). One createChatTools(chat) call wires the SDK's read and write actions, posting messages, sending DMs, reacting, editing, deleting, and managing subscriptions, into an AI SDK agent.

- Write tools are gated by a requireApproval option, so approval is on by default.

- Three presets, reader, messenger, and moderator, scope which tools an agent gets, and only the tools a preset allows are constructed.

- toAiMessages and its supporting types have moved to chat/ai. The old chat re-exports still work but are now flagged @deprecated, and migrating is a one-line import change.
