# AI SDK 6

By Steven Van · 2025-12-22

AI SDK 6 adds a reusable Agent abstraction, MCP support, DevTools, reranking, image editing, and a codemod for upgrading from v5.

[Vercel](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/vercel>) has released [AI SDK 6](<https://vercel.com/blog/ai-sdk-6>), the latest version of its TypeScript toolkit for building AI applications. The release adds a formal Agent abstraction, along with a set of other tools for developers building chatbots and background agents.

- **Agents:** a new Agent interface, with a ToolLoopAgent class that handles the full tool execution loop (calling the model, running tool calls, feeding results back, and repeating for up to 20 steps by default). Agents can be defined once and reused across a chat UI, background jobs, or API endpoints, with type-safe call options and UI streaming.

- Tool execution approval, DevTools, and full MCP support.

- Tool calling with structured output, and support for Standard JSON Schema.

- Reranking and image editing capabilities.

- Raw finish reason and extended usage data.

- A rewritten LangChain adapter.

- New provider tools.

Developers upgrading from AI SDK 5 can run npx @ai-sdk/codemod v6 to migrate automatically. Vercel cites Thomson Reuters, which built its CoCounsel assistant with the SDK, and Clay, which uses it to power its Claygent research agent.
