# What Is an AI Video Agent? Agent vs Generator, Explained

By Steven Van · 2026-09-25

Synthesys explains how its video agent differs from a clip generator, from a five-step brief-to-export workflow to when a generator is still enough.

An AI video agent turns one brief into a finished video, and [Synthesys](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/synthesys>) has [published a guide](<https://synthesys.io/blog/what-is-an-ai-video-agent/>) explaining how that differs from a video generator. It says it rebuilt Synthesys as an agent in 2026.

## Agent versus generator

The guide defines a generator as a tool that turns one prompt into one clip, leaving the script, shot prompts, face consistency, voice, captions and editing to the user. An agent takes a brief for the whole video and handles those jobs: scriptwriting, shot planning, casting a consistent presenter, voicing (including in other languages) and editing. In Synthesys, finished videos run from 10 seconds to 30 minutes.

As an example of the clip-length gap, it cites Google's Veo 3.1, which generates clips of 4, 6 or 8 seconds per request and can extend a video in 7-second steps, up to 148 seconds in total.

## The five steps

- **Brief:** describe the video in one sentence (topic, format, length, language), optionally with references such as product photos, a script or a competitor's ad.

- **Plan:** the agent writes the script and lays out a storyboard with timings, cast, voice and the render cost.

- **Greenlight:** the user edits the plan and approves it. Changing the plan costs nothing, while changing a finished render costs another render.

- **Build:** the agent renders each scene, choosing a model per shot, then adds voice, lip-sync, captions and the edit.

- **Refine and deliver:** fix a single beat without redoing the video, localize it, restyle it, and export in 9:16, 16:9 or 1:1.

## When a generator is enough

The guide recommends a generator for single shots, b-roll, effects, testing a look or model, clips under about 10 seconds, and full manual control of every frame. It recommends an agent for ads, explainers, lessons and YouTube videos, the same presenter across scenes and videos, and weekly output in several languages and formats. It also lists limits: a vague brief produces a generic plan, the agent cannot make a video model render something the model cannot, and longer videos take longer to build.

## Availability

Synthesys users can film themselves once to build a twin with their face and voice and reuse it in every video. The guide says every plan includes a commercial license and a 14-day money-back guarantee.
