# Claude Connectors: Build Your Own Without Code

A Quickchat tutorial shows how to connect a help-center Agent to Claude as a private custom connector, with prompts and tests, on the Free plan.

Quickchat has published a tutorial on building a custom Claude connector for a help center without writing code or running an MCP server. The walkthrough is in the [announcement](<https://quickchat.ai/post/claude-connectors-explained>), and it uses [Quickchat](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/quickchat>) to host the server that Claude connects to.

## What the connector does

A Claude custom connector is a connection to a remote MCP server that you add by URL. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, lets Claude discover the server's tools and call them. Here, Quickchat AI hosts the server and exposes one tool that asks your Agent a question. The tutorial's example is a fictional outdoor-gear retailer, Fernhill Outdoor, with an Agent called Fernhill Help. Claude asks the Agent whether an unworn jacket bought 45 days ago can be returned, and the Agent answers from the help-center article.

Adding a custom connector does not submit it to the Claude Connectors Directory or make it appear as a Suggested Connector. A separate Quickchat AI connector in the Directory covers account tasks such as creating Agents, editing knowledge and reviewing conversations from Claude, subject to your Quickchat AI permissions.

## How the build works

- Create an Agent named Fernhill Help, paste in a Main Prompt, and add one help-center article as knowledge.

- Test the Agent on its own first, using a dataset of single-turn questions, so a knowledge problem can be told apart from a connector problem.

- Enable MCP, connect the Agent's URL to Claude as a custom connector, then compare what you asked Claude, what Claude asked the Agent, and what came back.

The Main Prompt tells the Agent to say it cannot confirm an answer when the knowledge does not contain it, and to suggest contacting Fernhill support. In the shipping test, Claude treated Switzerland as an undocumented destination rather than a shipping ban. The author also reports that the return test caught a condition Claude added while paraphrasing the Agent's answer.

## Requirements and downloads

The build needs a Claude account and a Quickchat AI Agent you can configure. MCP is included on the current Free plan, though generated answers and Simulations use AI credits. Claude Free allows one custom connector, and Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise also support them. No API key or API integration is needed. Actions and handoff stay off, so the Agent only explains policy.

A downloadable Fernhill connector kit includes the knowledge, Main Prompt, MCP description, test questions, evaluation criteria, recorded results and a blank evidence sheet. These are editable reference files, not a one-click import.
