# Typed databases in the REST API

By Steven Van · 2026-09-02

Create a database now accepts an optional database\_type of tasks, projects, or skills.

The Notion API's create-a-database endpoint now accepts an optional database\_type of tasks, projects, or skills. Notion builds the database from that type's canonical schema and metadata, so the result matches what creating a database of that type in the [Notion](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/notion>) app would produce. If title is omitted, the database is named after its type, and database\_type can't be combined with initial\_data\_source. Database and data source objects also now expose a read-only database\_type field.

This lets developers building on the API create properly structured task, project, or skills databases without manually replicating Notion's schema for each type. Full details on the properties each type creates are in the [Typed databases documentation](<https://developers.notion.com/page/changelog#september-2-2026>).
