# Notion MCP splits keyword search and AI search

By Steven Van · 2026-09-02

notion-search is now keyword-only. It matches short, specific terms in Notion and no longer searches connected apps like Slack, Google Drive, and Jira.

Notion MCP's search tool is splitting in two. In [Notion](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/notion>)'s MCP server, notion-search now only matches keywords in Notion pages, and no longer searches connected apps like Slack, Google Drive, and Jira. A new notion-ai-search tool takes over semantic search: it takes one natural-language query and can search connected sources such as Slack, Mail, and Calendar when they're available to the caller, including queries that include specific terms.

Clients pick a tool by checking current\_tool\_access.ai\_search.status from notion-fetch: use notion-ai-search when it's available, and notion-search when it isn't. notion-ai-search requires Notion AI; without it, calls return a prompt with a recovery link rather than results. notion-search stays the tool for looking up a user by name or email, and notion-ai-search doesn't support the exact filters, sort options, or user lookup that notion-search does.

Clients still sending the old content\_search\_mode parameter keep working, per [the changelog](<https://developers.notion.com/page/changelog#september-2-2026>): workspace\_search behaves like notion-search and ai\_search behaves like notion-ai-search, though the parameter itself is no longer advertised.
