# notion-get-tool-access is optional

By Steven Van · 2026-10-07

Tools enforce access limits and report them in results, while workspace-owned connections retain the earlier instructions.

Clients using [Notion](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/notion>) MCP can now call tools directly without first checking access, except on workspace-owned connections. Tools enforce access limits themselves and report those limits in their results.

## When to check access first

Call notion-get-tool-access when plan or parameter details are needed before using a tool. The [October 7 update](<https://developers.notion.com/page/changelog#october-7-2026>) replaces the September 17 advice to call it first. Tool descriptions no longer instruct clients to make that preliminary call, except on workspace-owned connections.
