# Data source schema update fixes

By Steven Van · 2026-10-09

API updates preserve omitted descriptions and option lists, while option names match existing entries regardless of case.

Changing an existing option’s color through [Notion](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/notion>)’s data source update API now works instead of returning a validation\_error. The October 9 fixes cover select, multi\_select and status options.

## Matching existing options

Option names now match without regard to case. Sending high keeps the existing High option and its ID instead of replacing it. Omitting options from a select or multi\_select update also preserves the current options.

## Keeping descriptions

Property updates now preserve an existing description when it is omitted, across every property type and when changing a property’s type. The same rule applies to an option’s own description. Send null to clear a description.

The [data source update documentation](<https://developers.notion.com/reference/update-a-data-source>) is the reference for these changes.
