# Gemini 2.5 models access update

By Steven Van · 2026-09-18

New Gemini API projects are pointed to 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash, while 2.5 model access is now limited to prior users.

Google is restricting access to its **Gemini 2.5** models to accounts that have actively used them before, as part of an update to [Gemini](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/gemini>)'s API. The models aren't deprecated and will keep being served to existing users, but new projects are directed instead to **3.5 Flash-Lite** or **3.8 Flash**. Google says the change is meant to preserve capacity for both legacy workflows and new applications. Details are in the [Gemini API changelog](<https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/changelog>).
