# Usage metrics API adds usage from tools like OpenCode

By Steven Van · 2026-10-23

Enterprise and organization admins get per-client request, session and token counts, including OpenCode, Claude Code and Codex, in 1-day and 28-day reports.

The [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>) Copilot usage metrics API now counts model usage from tools such as OpenCode, which [were not previously captured](<https://docs.github.com/rest/copilot/copilot-usage-metrics>) in Copilot reports. The change adds a totals\_by\_client array to the existing reports.

## What each entry contains

Each totals\_by\_client entry represents one client and includes:

- client: the tool that sent the requests, such as opencode, claude\_code, codex, zed, copilot\_cli, github\_app, cloud\_agent, code\_review, vscode, or jetbrains. Unrecognized clients are grouped under other.

- request\_count: the number of successful model requests from the client.

- session\_count: the number of distinct sessions from the client.

- token\_usage: prompt tokens, output tokens, and average tokens per request.

- totals\_by\_model: the same request and token metrics broken down by model.

Within totals\_by\_model, a model\_selection\_mode shows whether the model was requested directly (user\_selected), chosen by auto (auto), or chosen by the product (product\_selected). Selection modes not yet reported individually appear as other, and values that can't be normalized appear as unknown.

## Why the gap existed

More developers use Copilot as the model provider behind tools outside the IDE. Those tools often don't send editor telemetry, so their usage was missing from totals\_by\_ide. Requests are now counted on the server, which lets admins compare request and token volume across tools.

GitHub notes this differs from agent app activity, which counts jobs started by agent apps such as Claude and Codex on GitHub. totals\_by\_client measures model traffic, meaning requests and tokens, from any tool that uses Copilot.

## Scope and access

totals\_by\_client is available in the enterprise, organization, enterprise-user, and organization-user reports, in both 1-day and 28-day versions. In the aggregated 28-day reports it appears in each day\_totals entry.

Access is open to enterprise owners and billing managers, organization owners, and anyone with a custom organization or enterprise role that grants the View Copilot Metrics permission. The Copilot usage metrics policy must be enabled.
