# Triage role users or higher can now archive pull requests

By Steven Van · 2026-10-08

Archiving closes a pull request and blocks comments and reactions, including those from administrators.

Repository administrators no longer have to handle pull request archiving alone. [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>) now lets users with triage, write, or maintain roles archive and unarchive pull requests, extending a moderation action commonly used for spam, duplicates, or abandoned contributions.

## Archived conversations become read-only

Archiving automatically closes a pull request and blocks new comments, reactions, and automated comments. Previously, administrators could still comment after archiving. Archived pull requests are hidden from public view and remain visible to repository administrators.

## Unarchiving does not reopen the pull request

Unarchiving restores the ability to comment and react, but leaves the pull request closed. As detailed in the [announcement](<https://github.blog/changelog/2026-10-08-triage-role-users-or-higher-can-now-archive-pull-requests>), triage users can perform these actions without gaining control over a conversation’s locked state, which requires write access.
