# Set an expiration date for individual user budgets

You can now set an optional expiration date on an individual user budget, and GitHub removes the budget on that date.

Individual user budgets in [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>)'s Copilot billing settings can now be given an [expiration date](<https://github.blog/changelog/2026-09-01-set-an-expiration-date-for-individual-user-budgets>), so GitHub removes them automatically instead of requiring manual cleanup. The capability is generally available for the **Copilot Business** and **Copilot Enterprise** plans.

When creating or editing a budget, admins can choose no expiration (the default), expiration at the start of the next billing cycle, or expiration on a specific date, and the date can be changed or cleared at any time. Once a budget expires, the user falls back to the next budget that applies to them: their cost center's per-user budget, or otherwise the universal budget. Previously, temporary budget overrides had to be removed by hand one at a time, creating recurring cleanup work at enterprise scale.

Expiration dates can be set in billing settings, or via the **expires\_at** field when creating or updating a budget through the Budgets REST API.
