# Public monitoring now available with data residency

By Steven Van · 2026-10-22

Public preview for GHEC data residency enterprises with a Secret Protection or Advanced Security license, at no extra cost, matching leaks by verified domain.

Enterprises on [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>) Enterprise Cloud with data residency (GHEC DR) can now use public monitoring, which is in public preview. It was announced in a [release note](<https://docs.github.com/code-security/secret-scanning/introduction/about-secret-scanning>) tied to secret scanning.

## What public monitoring does

Public monitoring extends secret scanning beyond internal repositories. It watches public commits across github.com and attributes exposed credentials back to your enterprise in real time. It detects secrets that enterprise members leak in public repositories, not only in repositories the enterprise owns.

## How attribution works in data residency

In data residency regions, attribution relies only on verified domain matching. Data residency environments keep strict tenant isolation from github.com, so enterprise membership rosters are not shared across that boundary. Instead, when a commit author's email matches a domain the enterprise has verified, the alert is encrypted and delivered to the enterprise dashboard. The data stays within the designated geography.

## Eligibility and billing

- Available in public preview for GitHub Enterprise Cloud customers with data residency.

- Requires an active **GitHub Advanced Security** or **GitHub Secret Protection** license.

- Enterprise admins and enterprise security managers can enable it under enterprise security settings.

- Included with either license at no additional cost.
