# New API endpoint provides privacy-safe star history data

By Steven Van · 2026-09-04

A new GitHub REST endpoint returns weekly star counts and timestamps without exposing who starred a repository.

GitHub has added a REST endpoint for tracking star history without exposing who starred a repository. GET /repos/{owner}/{repo}/stargazers/history returns stars grouped by calendar week, with counts and a day-by-day breakdown, but no stargazer identities.

The endpoint fills a gap left when [GitHub](<https://github.com/tools/github>) restricted its stargazer listing endpoints to admins and collaborators earlier this year to protect user privacy. Tools and integrations that previously tracked star growth using those endpoints can now switch to this [star history endpoint](<https://docs.github.com/rest/activity/starring?apiVersion=2026-03-10#get-repository-star-history>) instead. It works without authentication for public repositories, and pages move backward toward the repository's creation week so consecutive pages form one continuous series.
