# GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio — September update

By Steven Van · 2026-10-23

The Git agent can summarise pull requests, BYOM needs the new Agent (Preview), and NuGet warnings get a Copilot fix, on every Copilot plan.

GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio 2026 now has a Git agent that can [explore pull requests](<https://github.blog/changelog/2026-10-22-github-copilot-in-visual-studio-september-update-2>), a preview of Bring Your Own Model (BYOM) on the new Agent (Preview), and a fixer action for vulnerable NuGet packages. The September update is available on all [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>) Copilot plans, including Copilot Free, Student, Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise.

## Explore pull requests with the Git agent

Open GitHub Copilot Chat, select the Git agent, and attach a pull request as context from the Git Repository window. The agent returns a summary with navigable links that open the related comments and files in the IDE's pull request view. Follow-up questions are supported. This requires connecting your Git provider's MCP servers, and both GitHub and Azure DevOps are supported.

## Bring Your Own Model

BYOM is in preview and on by default in the Community, Professional and Enterprise editions. It lets teams use their preferred models, through GitHub Copilot or their own deployments, whether or not they are signed in to GitHub. Supported providers are Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic and Ollama, with custom endpoints for OpenAI and Ollama.

To start, open Chat, open the model picker, choose Add a model or Manage Models, connect to a provider, then work in Agent Mode. Not every model supports every Agent Mode capability yet, and Visual Studio marks unsupported features instead of failing silently.

This release includes breaking changes:

- BYOM now works only with the new Agent (Preview), which is built on the GitHub Copilot SDK-powered harness. The previous Ask and Agent modes no longer support it.

- Ollama models added earlier must be re-added after updating.

## Fix NuGet vulnerabilities from the Error List

After a restore reports an NU1901, NU1902, NU1903 or NU1904 warning, select the sparkle action in the Fixer column of the Error List. This opens Copilot Chat in agent mode and asks Copilot to fix the vulnerable packages using the NuGet MCP server. Review and apply the proposed changes afterwards. It requires signing in to GitHub Copilot and enabling the NuGet MCP server, which is built into Visual Studio, from the Copilot Chat tools menu.

## Debugging changes

The [Visual Studio blog post](<https://devblogs.microsoft.com/visualstudio/visual-studio-september-update-power-your-workflow-with-your-model>) also covers two debugging changes:

- In C# if statements that use && or ||, red and green highlighting shows which operand decided the result, next to the existing inline true or false hint. It can be turned off from the editor context menu, and the colours can be changed under Tools, Options, Environment, Fonts and Colors.

- Attach to Process now supports Podman containers. Set Connection type to Podman and select Find. Both .NET and C++ containers work with no extra configuration.
