# GitHub Copilot assisted permissions generally available

By Steven Van · 2026-10-26

Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and VS Code can now auto-approve requests an LLM judges clearly safe, with enterprise policy controls.

Assisted permissions are now generally available in [GitHub](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/github>) Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app, and Visual Studio Code. When Copilot requests permission to run a command, access a file system path, or open a URL, a large language model evaluates the request. Requests classified as clearly safe proceed automatically. All other requests need the user's approval.

## Turning it on

- **Copilot CLI:** run /permissions, then select *assisted*.

- **Copilot app:** open the mode picker, click *Tool permissions*, then select *Assisted*.

- **Visual Studio Code:** open the permissions picker, then select *Assisted permissions*.

## Enterprise controls

Enterprise administrators can use enterprise-managed settings to block Allow All while keeping Assisted available, or to disable Assisted separately. Administrators can also choose the default permission mode for new sessions. Developers can still select another mode that policy permits. If the default is unavailable or prohibited by policy, the session starts with manual approval.

Details on how assisted permissions evaluate requests and when approval is required are in GitHub's documentation, "Allowing safe commands to run without manual approval". The change is covered in the [original changelog entry](<https://github.blog/changelog/2026-10-26-github-copilot-assisted-permissions-generally-available>).
