# Email notifications for repository push events have been retired

By Steven Van · 2026-10-15

Push-event emails were removed to curb spam and abuse, and a GitHub Actions workflow with your own SMTP server or email provider can replace them.

GitHub has retired email notifications for repository push events. As of October 15, 2026, the emails are no longer sent.

## Why it was shut down

GitHub says it removed the feature to help prevent spam and abuse. Recipients didn't have to consent before receiving these emails, so the feature could be misused to send unwanted messages through GitHub's email infrastructure.

## How to keep push emails

Teams that still want email notifications for pushes can use a GitHub Actions workflow triggered by push events. The workflow sends the emails through your own SMTP server or email provider.
