# Control opacity at scale

By Steven Van · 2026-09-03

Opacity can be updated at scale in the variables modal and applied on top of any color without detaching.

[Figma](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/figma>) now lets opacity be set as a variable and applied on top of any color without detaching it from the library. The update, [announced](<https://www.figma.com/release-notes/?title=control-opacity-at-scale>) on 2026-09-03, covers three changes:

- Alias opacity while the color stays linked to your library, instead of detaching it to adjust opacity by hand.

- Set opacity on a color variable using a number variable, scoped specifically for use in color variables.

- Update opacity across disabled states, overlays, scrims and similar elements all at once.
