# Key Presets and Custom Policies

By Steven Van · 2026-10-09

Keys can be limited to specific models and set to expire, while existing ADMIN and API keys continue to work.

New keys in [fal](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/fal>) can use one of seven permission presets or a custom selection of permissions, replacing the ADMIN and API scopes for key creation.

## Choose permissions and limits

When creating a key, select API, SERVERLESS, DEPLOY, COMPUTE, BILLING, READONLY, or FULL. If none fits, select the exact permissions the key needs. Keys can also be limited to specific models and given an expiration.

## Live presets or fixed policies

A preset key follows the preset’s live definition. A custom policy key keeps the permissions it had at creation. Adding a model limit to a preset key makes it a custom policy key, so its permissions stay fixed too.

Existing ADMIN and API keys continue to work. The Platform API reference now lists the permissions each API requires and which presets include them. See the [original announcement](<https://docs.fal.ai/changelog#october-9-2026>).
