# Workspaces: Basic seat fallback: Update member accepts allow\_downgrade\_to\_basic\_seat

By Steven Van · 2026-10-12

Workspace administrators must enable the fallback, which defaults to false and requires an available basic seat.

Workspace administrators in [ElevenLabs](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/elevenlabs>) can now unlock a user even when no seats of that user’s original type are available, provided a basic seat is available.

## Enable the basic seat fallback

Set allow\_downgrade\_to\_basic\_seat to true when unlocking the user through the [Update member endpoint](<https://elevenlabs.io/docs/api-reference/workspace/members/update>). The user moves to a basic seat instead of the request failing. The option defaults to false, and only workspace administrators can call the endpoint.
