# Codex 0.164.0

By Steven Van · 2026-10-23

Ten saved preset slots, inline /model and /permissions arguments, and Kitty and Sixel image previews arrive in the Codex CLI alongside compaction and resume fixes.

Codex 0.164.0 adds saved prompt slots, inline model and permission arguments, and image previews in the fullscreen transcript. Release notes for the [0.164.0 release](<https://github.com/openai/codex/releases/tag/rust-v0.164.0>) also list changes to enterprise MCP sign-in, credential masking and Amazon Bedrock setup, plus several bug fixes.

## New features

- **Presets:** reusable prompts and slash commands can be saved in ten numbered /presets slots, with a keyboard menu for quick access.

- **Inline arguments:** model, reasoning effort, speed and permission profiles can be set directly with inline /model and /permissions arguments.

- **Image previews:** viewed and generated images can be previewed in the fullscreen transcript on terminals that support Kitty or Sixel graphics.

- **Enterprise MCP:** connections can authenticate using eligible Codex account grants or a dedicated sign-in, including OAuth clients that require secrets.

- **Credential masking:** credentials are masked during supported remote Bash commands and Zsh snapshot sessions, including credentials from custom providers.

- **Amazon Bedrock:** the setup wizard is now enabled by default. When credentials are detected, API key entry is grouped alongside other AWS sign-in methods.

## Bug fixes

- A failed compaction no longer leaves partial summaries in conversation history, and background compaction failures fall back without panicking.

- Resuming sessions now finds compressed histories and restores saved thread settings instead of replacing them with global defaults.

- Windows HTTPS and WebSocket connections handle proxy authentication challenges using the signed-in user's Negotiate or NTLM credentials.

- CLI configuration overrides are preserved when -c or --config appears at multiple subcommand levels.

- Queued prompts wait for pending permission selections to resolve before continuing.

- Sandbox checks are hardened for case-variant metadata paths on macOS and for replaceable symlinks used to locate executables.

## Chores

Disk usage is reduced by pruning unused installations, cleaning abandoned marketplace checkouts and bounding daemon logs. The embedded JavaScript runtime was also updated, with safety checks for optimized Array.sort operations.
