# Claude Code's /fork now runs a background agent, not a copy

By Steven Van · 2026-06-06

The old copy-the-conversation behaviour moves to a new /branch command, Anthropic said on 6 June 2026.

[Claude](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/claude>) Code has changed what /fork does: it now spins up a background agent that inherits your exact context and prompt cache, rather than starting a fresh session. The previous /fork behaviour, branching off a copy of the conversation, is now available under /branch. Anthropic [announced the change](<https://x.com/i/status/2061947411141169494>) on 6 June 2026.
