# Claude Code 2.1.302

By Steven Van · 2026-10-16

The release adds a model setting for client-side auto mode and an idle compaction toggle, and warns that standalone Claude Design closes December 14, 2026.

Claude Code 2.1.302 adds a setting for the auto mode classifier's model, a toggle for idle compaction, and a notice about the end of standalone Claude Design.

## New in this release

- A new environment variable, CLAUDE\_CODE\_AUTO\_MODE\_MODEL, chooses the model the client-side auto mode classifier uses. It does not change the model for server-side auto mode.

- /config has a new Idle compaction row for turning idle compaction off or back on. The notices shown after an idle compaction now say how to turn it off.

- /design-sync and /design-login now show a notice that standalone Claude Design (claude.ai/design) closes by December 14, 2026.

## Fixes

- Stopping a turn while the conversation was being compacted no longer causes a "Prompt is too long" error.

- Requests no longer fail with "diagnostics: Extra inputs are not permitted" after switching to Vertex or Bedrock mid-session.

- The Read tool no longer loads an image file of any size, or a pipe or device named like an image, entirely into memory. Image sources over 128 MB are now refused.

- /autocompact and /effort no longer save to the wrong model when a gateway names Opus 4 or 4.1 with a prefix, such as anthropic/claude-opus-4-1.

- A prompt cache miss is fixed for tools added mid-session and then loaded again through ToolSearch or after compaction.

- claude plugin and other subcommands no longer sometimes exit before a queued settings or config write has finished.
