[Claude Code](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/claude-code>) [2.1.257](<https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#21257>) makes Claude Fable 5.1 (claude-fable-5-1) the default Fable model, with a 1M-token context window and cache reads priced at $0.25/Mtok. The release also adds several settings and a new safety rule:

- A "Time format" setting and a time zone setting let the turn-end clock and transcript-view timestamps use 12-hour, 24-hour, 24-hour UTC, or a custom strftime pattern.

- Auto mode gets a Containment Escape rule: cloud metadata-credential fetches, egress evasion, and cross-tenant reach are no longer auto-approved unless the environment marks them expected.

- A new CLAUDE\_CODE\_SUBAGENT\_MODEL\_FORCE environment variable applies CLAUDE\_CODE\_SUBAGENT\_MODEL, or the main model, to every subagent, overriding per-spawn and agent-definition model choices.

- "/effort s" changes the effort level for the current session only, matching how "/model" already works.

- "/doctor" now warns about stale sandbox mask files left behind by a killed session.

- Auto mode now asks once, before the first file read outside the working directories, with an option to block such reads entirely via the permissions.blockReadsOutsideWorkingDirectories setting.

- Gateway-supplied descriptions can appear on "/model" picker entries discovered via CLAUDE\_CODE\_ENABLE\_GATEWAY\_MODEL\_DISCOVERY; entries without one still read "From gateway".
