# ChatGPT pastes keep formatting, adds a reasoning slider

By Steven Van · 2026-08-07

The August 7 drop also brings GPT-5.6 Sol to paid tiers, unlimited free-tier text, and voice Q&A on uploaded files.

OpenAI closed out the week with a five-part [ChatGPT](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/chatgpt>) feature drop, recapped on X by OpenAI's Adam Fry on August 7. The list covers the whole product surface: the web composer, the models behind paid and free tiers, the Android camera, and the new voice experience. None of these are moonshots. All of them remove friction from things creators do in ChatGPT every day, which is exactly why the drop is worth reading closely.

## Pasted emails and docs keep their formatting

First up, the web composer now retains rich formatting when you paste in emails or documents. Headings, bold text, lists, and links survive the trip instead of collapsing into a wall of plain text. Fry admitted this one was overdue, writing that "copying and pasting is so common, we should have done this a while ago." If your workflow involves dropping a client brief, a newsletter draft, or a doc into ChatGPT for a rewrite, the model now sees the structure you see, which tends to produce edits that respect that structure.

## GPT-5.6 Sol and a slider for how hard ChatGPT thinks

Paid users get an updated GPT-5.6 Sol, tuned to feel more consistent whether you are firing off a quick question or running a deeper reasoning task. Alongside it comes a new slider that lets you choose how much thought ChatGPT puts into a response: keep it low for everyday lookups, push it up for planning, research, or a script that has to land. Fry notes the slider ships with fun haptics on mobile. Behind the polish there is substance: OpenAI says responses containing at least one factual error are about 68 percent less common with the updated Sol than with its predecessor, and the model keeps a consistent tone whether it answers instantly or thinks first.

## Free users get GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text

The free tier is getting GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text messages, rolling out soon. OpenAI announced the day before that Luna becomes the default for Free and Go users this week, with unlimited text chats and a new Think button following. Limits still apply to file uploads, image generation, and other tools, but the core loop of asking, drafting, and iterating in text no longer hits a wall on the free plan.

## A faster Android camera and Voice x Files

Two smaller items round out the drop. The Android camera flow is now much faster, which matters if you use ChatGPT to capture whiteboards, products, or printed pages on the go. And a feature OpenAI calls Voice x Files lands in the new ChatGPT voice experience powered by GPT-Live: upload files, then ask questions about them out loud. For creators, that means talking through a contract, a research PDF, or an episode transcript hands-free, with the full document in context.

## How to put this drop to work

The practical playbook: paste your source material into the web composer instead of retyping or stripping it, since formatting now carries over. Set the reasoning slider low for quick tasks so you are not waiting on thinking you do not need, and raise it for outlines, briefs, and anything factual. If you are on the free tier, watch for Luna, because unlimited text removes the main reason to ration your prompts. And if you narrate ideas while walking or driving, Voice x Files turns that habit into a real review workflow.
