# Canva Craft brings Canva’s own image model to every user

By Steven Van · 2026-10-22

Canva’s first in-house image model, built for design, makes images up to 2K in 30+ aspect ratios and is live in Dream Lab for all users.

Canva released [Canva Craft](<https://creatorstoolbox.com/tools/canva>) on October 22. It’s the first image generation model that Canva Research, the company’s in-house AI lab, built and trained from scratch, and it’s made specifically for design. It’s live now for every Canva user in Dream Lab.

## How it works

Most image models turn a prompt straight into pixels. Craft works in two stages. First, a planning model reads your prompt and writes out the composition: which elements appear, where they sit, how big they are and any text the image needs. Then a rendering model turns that plan into an image at up to 2K resolution, in more than 30 aspect ratios or a custom size.

Canva trained it on millions of human-made templates from its library, such as posters, social posts, presentations, infographics and menus, rather than mainly on photographs. That’s meant to help it get layout, hierarchy and legible text right. You can prompt in any language, and Craft can write text in 55 languages. Its images also work well with Magic Layers, which turns a generated image into editable design elements.

## Availability

To try it, open Dream Lab from the bottom-left panel in Canva. Developers can call it through Canva’s public API as the craft\_v1\_2k model. That image generation endpoint is still in preview and uses the account’s AI credits. Craft in the Canva MCP Server, for AI assistants, is coming soon, along with two faster, cheaper versions called Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast. The announcement does not say how many Craft images each Canva plan includes.

## Why it matters

Canva says Craft debuted as the fourth-ranked image model on DesignArena’s leaderboard, which makes Canva the second-ranked AI lab for image generation. It also ranks first for People & Portraits and for Landscapes & Nature. For creators, the bigger change is that a model trained on design now sits inside the editor you already use, so a generated poster or social post can become an editable design.
