# How to add an MCP server to Claude: Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code

Unif API published a [guide to adding MCP servers across Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code](<https://unifapi.com/blog/how-to-add-an-mcp-server-to-claude>), using its own server as the example.

For remote servers in Claude.ai and Desktop, use Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. Custom connectors require a paid plan, and Team or Enterprise owners may need to enable them. The server must be reachable from the public internet.

Local Desktop servers go in claude\_desktop\_config.json and need a full restart. Claude Code uses claude mcp add; project-scoped servers require approval before first use.
