What is ChippyTea?

ChippyTea is a small open-source utility by Richie McIlroy for reclaiming disk space on a Mac. Point it at the folders you care about and it lists the build folders, project dependencies, downloads and installers taking up room, with an estimated size for each. You approve every removal: builds and dependencies are deleted permanently, while downloads and installers go to the Trash, and a history records what was cleared.

A chip counter awards a chip per 100 MB freed. There is no account and no telemetry, nothing is deleted on its own, and it is MIT licensed for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later.

  • Scans the folders you choose for space hogs: build outputs, node_modules and other dependencies, downloads and installers

  • Review each item; a cleanup history keeps track of what went
  • Builds and dependencies are removed permanently, downloads and installers go to the Trash
  • A chip counter awards one chip per 100 MB reclaimed
  • No account, no telemetry, nothing deleted on its own; Apple Silicon, macOS 14+
